There are rumors, fake stories, false reports, and simply implausible theories out there that anyone with common sense should realize are factually untrue. One of them suggests that autism can be cured with chlorine bleach. The sad part is that some parents are so desperate to heal their child they'll actually do it. It can kill, maim, and disfigure the child, or cause permanent damage.
Many have criticized the education system for failing to teach basic life skills to students. It is true that today, high school graduates have a tough time with basic tasks like cooking a simple meal, writing a check, or balancing their checkbooks. It is far worse for those on the autism spectrum.
At least twice a week someone asks me about the connection between vaccines and autism. For a long time, it has been a difficult task to avoid giving them a straightforward answer. Without having the research that could easily be explained, it was best not to conjecture or hypothesize.
Every single day, someone who is autistic reaches adulthood. As they turn 18 years of age, their futures remain in doubt. Will they be able to cope in an increasingly hostile world, outside the safety and protection of both school and parental care?
